Osaka nishikiga shinbun - Rare design from the newspaper "Osaka nishikiga shinbun" (Osaka Illustrated News), which featured woodblock illustrations of stories from various newspapers. These often sensational images depict contemporary events in the news, including murders, robberies, and assaults, as well as some positive stories and even supernatural occurrences. Rendered in lively colors, each illustration is accompanied by a story in text. The title cartouche takes the form of a fluttering flag atop a pole at upper right, dates Meiji 8 (1875). Nishiki-e or illustrated newspapers became popular during the Meiji era, first in Tokyo, then in Osaka. The Osaka designs are much rarer, and unlike their Tokyo counterparts, are most often in the smaller chuban format. A great choice for a collector interested in Meiji woodblocks, or kamigata-e, prints from the Osaka region.
