Ryogoku: Playing Music, 1877

Comments - Attractive scene of beauties preparing for an evening of musical entertainment. The woman in the center replaces a string on her shamisen, holding the replacement string in her mouth as she works. Another beauty at right tunes her instrument, while her seated companion reaches in to a tobacco pouch to fill her pipe. At left, a guest and a young girl arrive. The room opens onto a lovely winter view, with snow falling over the river and blanketing the buildings along the opposite shore. A charming design, beautifully detailed.
