Play in the Fourth Month at the Kabukiza, 1899

Comments - Handsome triptych illustrating a scene from a kabuki play at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo about a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals. Each family owns an estate on opposite sides of the Yoshino River, which rushes through the center of the scene. The young samurai Koganosuke and the beauty Hinadori decide that they would rather commit suicide together than be separated by their families. At left, Hinadori kneels beside her mother, looking up at her with a concerned expression. Her mother holds a small doll (hina) of the Empress. A diagonal divides the scene with Koganosuke and his father, Daihanji Kiyosumi at right, Kiyosumi grimacing angrily as he looks over his shoulder, a blossoming cherry branch in his hand. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichimura Kakitsu, and Ichikawa Danjuro. An attractive design, detailed with burnishing on the black lacquer railing and Hinadori's black obi.
