Boshu, Flowers of Kominato, Lotus Pond, Myomeijiro and His Wife Umechiyo, No. 42 - Intriguing scene showing the birth of a son to the fisherman Myomeijiro and his wife, Uchmechiyo. The boy would grow up to become the famous 12th century Buddhist priest Nichiren, and at his birth the sun rose over the lotus pond at Kominato. The smiling grandmother gives the baby his first bath as his father stands ready with a towel. The mother recovers in bed with a cup of hot tea on a tray nearby as the rising sun casts a rosy pink glow along the horizon, with lotuses blossoming on the pond and a village in the distance. The inset at upper left shows Nichiren at prayer, quietly reciting the Lotus Sutra, as an evil serpent tries to distract him without success. A charming image of this miraculous birth, detailed with mica on the background of the sky above the snake.
