A Chronicle of the Subjugation of Kagoshima in Satsuma Province: Battle before Kumamato Castle, 1877

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of the battle at Kumamoto Castle in Satsuma. In the center, the rebel Shinohara Kunimoto thrusts his spear at an Imperial Army soldier as his horse rears on it hind legs. An officer on horseback at right waves his sword, urging his troops forward amidst clouds of smoke. At left, another warrior on a brown horse gestures with his sword as the rebels around him rush at the enemy with weapons held high, one of them stopping to take aim with his gun. The towers of the castle loom high above the fighting at right against a dark night sky. A terrific image with wonderful detail and fine shading in the mountains, smoke, and sky.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - Finely printed with sharp, crisp detail. From a well preserved, almost untouched collection of Yoshitoshi senso-e. Not backed, three separate prints. Nice surface condition, smooth and not rubbed. Overall very good.
