Comments - Handsome scene depicting the transfer ceremony at Ise Shrine to move sacred treasures from the old building to the new one. Every twenty years, the shrine buildings are reconstructed as part of the Shinto belief in the impermanence of all things and the death and renewal of nature. A procession of priests and nobleman passes solemnly through the gate, with priests unrolling a white cloth for the Emperor, who is shielded from view by cloth awnings. The men wear formal court robes and a group of priests near the front of the line carries flaming torches. Clouds frame the scene at left and right. An attractive design with fine detail and soft shading.
