Shinozuka Iga-no-Kami Sadatsuna

Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Shinozuka Iga-no-Kami Sadatsuna - Bold design of Shinozuka Iga-no-Kami Sadatsuna gripping an enormous wooden beam from Kawai Castle at Seta in Iyo Province. One of Nitta no Yoshisada's trusted retainers, Shinozuka was said to possess incredible strength. Here, he uses a great pillar from the palace as a weapon, ready to hurl it at his enemies. He grasps the beam with both hands, hugging it to his chest as he takes the weight on his back leg, preparing to lunge ahead and toss it into the air. A fantastic image, beautifully detailed with burnishing in the armor and a dusting of mica over the stone wall at upper left. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection. A dramatic composition. This print is from an 1886 edition published by Tsunajima Kamekichi.
