The Entrance Gate at Enoshima in Sagami Province

Series; Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji

Hiroshige's Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji - In Japan, Mt. Fuji is a sacred place and a symbol of the country itself. Rising majestically near the center of Japan, Fuji dominates the landscape and the Japanese national identity. Hiroshige completed designs for his last series, "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," in 1858. Following a tradition established by Hokusai, Hiroshige’s wonderful series show the mountain in each of the four seasons, from a variety of vantage points. Hiroshige utilized a vertical full oban format to create dramatic and breathtaking views of this most revered landmark. Views range from the urban city center of Edo to cherry blossom viewing in a small village and the fantastic crashing wave at Awa. Seen less frequently than some of his more well-known series, "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" ranks as one of Hiroshige's best vertical format series.

Hosukaku Publishing - This beautiful, rare reprint was produced in Tokyo during the Taisho era by the Hosukaku Publishing house. Hosukaku produced shin-hanga designs as well as reprints by the great ukiyo-e masters such as Utamaro, Eishi, and Toyokuni I. The print is sealed with the Hosukaku seal of a bellflower beneath triple mountains, and was produced prior to 1923, as the Hosukaku print shop was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake. Masterfully printed, this group of beauty reprints includes many designs that are almost never seen.

The Entrance Gate at Enoshima in Sagami Province - Lovely view of the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji beautifully framed between the pillars of a torii gate at the shrine of Enoshima. A few beauties in matching kimono climb the low stone steps towards the building at left, one pausing at the top to wait for her friends. Several ferry boats carry passengers over to the island. A wonderful design with rich color and fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
