Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Shirasuka: Panoramic View of Shiomizaka; Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jiraiya - Intriguing image of Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the folk hero Jiraiya sitting in a palanquin during a rest stop, scowling as a young baby crawls towards him with a smile. The samurai wears a striped kimono, one sword resting against his shoulder, and his geta clogs are carefully hung up behind him on the outside of the palanquin. Above, Hiroshige shows travelers making their way up the steep hill at Shirasuga, with a fine panoramic view of Shiomizaka below. Waves roll along the shore and white sails dot the sea in the distance. A great design from this collaborative Tokaido series by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige. This print is from a later edition with a colored background.
