Scene from Sekai no Hana Oguri Gaiden, 1851

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play "Scene from Sekai no Hana Oguri Gaiden" of a confrontation in side a house. At left, a worried man stumbles forward as Onio no Dohachi kneels on the floor reaching up as if to help him. In the center, Riyaushi, who is actually Mido Kotaro in disguise, looks up with an angry scowl. At right, Zeze no Shirozo emerges from beneath the floorboards with a woman's hairpin in his hand, an alarmed expression on his face. Just above, Princess Terute peers out from inside a cupboard. At bottom center, a tobacco set rests on the floor and a low folding screen at right features a design of gourd vines. A straw raincoat and hand hang on the wall at top center next to a curtained doorway. From left, the actors are Nakayama Ichizo I, Ichikawa Hirogoro I, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, Sawamura Gennosuke III, and Onoe Kikujiro II. A great image with expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
