Series; Twelve Months of Flowers, 1880
September: Senju Chrysanthemum - Handsome kabuki depiction of Nakamura Kanjaku III as the yakko or footman Chienai, who is actually the samurai Yoshikoka Kisanta, disguised in an attempt to obtain the great Heike warrior Kiichi Hogen's books of military strategy. He looks up over his shoulder with an unhappy frown, his brows furrowed, clutching a blue cloth to his chest. He wears a bright blue outer robe with a distinctive striped collar worn by yakko, over a red under robe patterned with embossed scrolls. The inset above shows a Senju chrysanthemum plant covered with red and yellow blossoms, an allusion to the "Chrysanthemum Garden" scene in the play "Kiichi Hogen." A great design with a bold red tie-dyed textile pattern behind the figure adding graphic impact. Detailed with embossing on the white areas of the kimono.
