October: Autumn Color

Series; Twelve Months of Flowers, 1880

October: Autumn Color - Striking kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Sadanji I as the robber Goemon. Hunching forward aggressively, he grips a pole arm with both hands, his body tensed and ready to spring into action. He wears a brown plaid kimono tucked up at the waist for easier movement, a blue cloth wrapped around his head against the cool evening air. A red tie-dyed fabric pattern provides a bold backdrop for the figure, with a lovely image above of a maple tree with colorful red autumn foliage, a full moon glowing in the night sky. A great design from this rarely seen Kunichika series. Includes burnishing on the handle of the pole arm.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and small marks, staining at edge. Please see photos for details.
