Lion Dancers, 1867

Comments - Bold kabuki scene of three actors portraying lion dancers. From left, the actors are Otani Tomoemon V as Fukami Jiro, Nakamura Shikan IV as Hidetaro, and Sawamura Tossho II as Tomiki Saburo. Each wears a costume with white pompoms on it, a long wig, and a headdress of a peony atop folding fans with bells attached. In the center, the white wigged dancer raises a peony branch above his head with an angry, tight-lipped frown. At left, the younger dancer with the red wig reacts with a sneer. Nice large figures set against a dark night sky, beautifully detailed embossing on the white wig.
