Flowers, 1980

Yamaguchi Kayo - Born in Kyoto, Yamaguchi Kayo studied Shijo and Maruyama school painting with well-known artists Nishimura Goun and Takeuchi Seiho. He incorporated modern Western techniques with traditional nihonga painting to create his own innovative style. He also taught for many years at what is today known as the Kyoto City University of the Arts. He received the Japanese Order of Cultural Merit in 1956, and was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto in 2012. 

Comments - Striking large format design of deep red peony blossoms, the petals beautifully detailed and shaded to black near the centers. A lovely contemporary woodblock, published by Kodansha from a limited edition of 250 prints, numbered and titled in pencil in bottom margin.
