Series; Comparison of Flowers (Hana kurabe), circa 1875 - 1880

Comparison of Flowers - Shibata Zeshin's series "Comparison of Flowers (Hana kurabe) comprises one hundred prints, which were released in ten groups of ten woodblocks each. Along with flowers and plants, the series features a wide variety of subjects, from people visiting a temple or climbing a hill to still-lifes and animals. Zeshin studied painting with the great artists of the Maruyama-Shijo School in Kyoto. The school's style combined the direct observation and realism of Western artists with traditional Japanese painting techniques. His prints feature lively calligraphic line work and nicely balanced asymmetrical compositions. A charming group.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Wormholes throughout, repaired. A few prints have slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
