The Stage Curtain of Ancient and Modern Dolls, 1851

Comments - Interesting print depicting musicians in matching attire and the Emperor and Empress in the form of a doll display like that traditionally set up during the Girls' Festival. In the foreground at left, a beauty plays a drum on a stand as two other drummers look on. One of them frowns at her angrily with his hand thrown out at his side, while the fellow in the center looks alarmed. A musician sitting at far right holds a flute. The figures are set on a black lacquer wooden base. On a tier above, the Empress watches with excitement, grinning happily, her ornate headdress topped with a phoenix. Cherry blossoms floating on water decorate a folding screen behind the couple, with drapery at either side. An intriguing image, attractively colored and beautifully detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight paper remnants on reverse along horizontal centerfold. A few tiny holes, small thinning spot, repaired. Wrinkling along folds, slight soiling. Please see photos for details.
