Fuji Arts’ special acquisition from Momose - This print is from a beautiful group of limited edition prints recently acquired from the archives of the publisher, The Momose Print Company of Tokyo. We purchased the entire balance of the publisher’s limited-edition inventory of all designs. They are only available on the secondary market and have become increasingly difficult to find. The prints were originally offered in a shin-hanga limited edition promotion from Momose. The Shinsui and Kaburagi beauties were sold for 280,000 yen each (approx. $2,750).
Comments - Interesting large-format image of a statue of the Buddhist deity. From the title of the work, the figure could be Kanzeon (or Kannon), or possibly a sculpture of a bosatsu or boddhisattva at the Kanzeon Shrine, which houses a number of famous statues. She sits on a lotus blossom, a flower in her hand. Flames in delicate line work surround the figure. Kagaku Murakami was a Japanese painter best known for his Buddhist subjects. This print comes from a posthumous limited edition of woodblocks published by Momose based on an earlier painting by the artist. The edition was limited to 300.
