Beauties Spinning and Pounding Cloth, circa 1770 - 1773 - Charming scene of two women working at daily tasks. Inside the house, a beauty spins thread, stretching out a long strand as she winds it onto a wheel. Outside, another woman pounds cloth on a rock. Rice fields can be seen on the plains beyond, with mountains along the horizon beneath a pink sky. Clouds frame the scene at top and bottom, with a verse above. Shunsho's series "Fashionable Brocade Pictures of the Tales of Ise" was published around 1770 to 73 in two volume, with a total of 48 prints in the series. The "Tales of Ise" is a collection of waka poems from the Heian era. A beautifully detailed look at everyday life in old Japan and a rare early design by Shunsho. A nice choice for a collector.
