Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Taikoki, 1876

Comments - Handsome triptych features two scenes from the play commonly known as "Taikoki" (The Chronicle of the Taiko), a drama about Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had the honorific title "taiko." At left, a rogue with closely cropped hair stands under an umbrella, scowling angrily as he looks ahead. A diagonal line separates the figure from the couple at right, where a beauty who is one of Hideyoshi's servants hands a tiny striped sake cup to her companion. She tilts her head coyly, adjusting a hairpin as she looks at the man out of the corner of her eyes. He stares back at her with a tight-lipped frown. A musician plays the shamisen on a platform behind them, and signs are hung along the back of the room. The actors include Sawamura Sojuro in the center and Bando Hikosaburo at right. An interesting design with vibrant color, detailed with fine line work in the hair.
