Sales Clerk Soshichi and Blind Man Kiriyama Kenko, 1856

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait from a play about the sales clerk Soshichi, who accidentally witnesses the pirate Kezori smuggling and is forced to join his gang. Here, he looks up with an angry frown as he sits beside the elderly blind man Kiriyama Kenko, who clasps his sleeves to his chest with a distraught expression. Behind the pair, sliding panels with shoji at the top and wood below line the back of the room. From left, the actors are Sawmura Tossho II and Seki Sanjuro III in a scene from "Hito kana deko dakara Soga." An interesting scene with expressive figures.
