Visitors at a Shrine

Series; Sketch Club, 1917

Sketch Club - Handsome shin-hanga design from the series "Sketch Club," featuring woodblocks by Tsuruta Goro and Kawabata Ryushi. The pair of artists founded the group "Sketch Club" in 1915, and published this series of travelers and scenic views in Taisho 6 (1917). The genre of "sketch-tour books" became popular in Japan in the early 20th-century, and this is a rarely seen series. Rendered in muted colors, some images are done in lively line work alone, capturing the immediacy of the sketch, while others include a few colors. Interestingly, many of the colored prints do not have a black key block outline, a departure from traditional ukiyo-e prints reflecting the modern sensibilities of the shin-hanga movement. Details such as a man taking a photograph and an electric streetcar reflect the time period. A charming group and a nice choice for a shin-hanga collector.
