Comments - Handsome kabuki group portrait of actors as heroes of the "Suikoden," from the Chinese novel, "The Water Margin" (Suikoden in Japanese). At upper left, a priest with a portable shrine on his back strikes a man over the shoulder with his wooden walking stick. He wears a gray robe over armor, and his short hair sticks up atop his head. At bottom left, a woman warrior wearing layers of kimono over a suit of armor grips a wooden oar. At top center, a wild-haired samurai draws his sword. A text panel featuring actors' names runs across the top, with the date of Meiji 20 (1887) in the title cartouche at upper right. Nice colorful figures set off by the red background.
