The New Eighteen Kabuki Plays by Ichikawa Danjuro IX: Hidari Jingoro, 1887

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych showing the famed sculptor Hidari Jingoro looking up at his creation with an astonished expression. According to legend, the skilled carpenter once carved a beautiful woman from wood that was so lifelike that it began to move when he admired it while drinking sake. Here, he scratches his head in amazement as he gazes up the sculpture coming to life before him, a cup of sake in his hand. The beauty looks back at him with a sober expression, raising her hands beneath her robe. She wears a lovely red kimono patterned with stalks of grain, tied with a green brocade obi that reverses to purple with a burnished geometric pattern, a hairpin shaped like a miniature round fan tucked into her stylish hair. A great illustration from this famous tale, with large colorful figures. Includes embossing on the white towel draped over Jingoro's shoulder, and a flecks of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone on the blue background at left.
