Iwafuji Berating Onoe, 1886

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from a play about the young lady-in-waiting, Onoe. The jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji was intent on causing the downfall of Onoe, so she replaced a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a sandal. Here, Iwafuji waves the sandal she has just "discovered," glaring angrily at Onoe. The beauty turns her face away as she watches the older woman out of the corners of her eyes, not yet sure of what is taking place. Behind them, sliding panels patterned with clouds open onto another room on the palace. At left, Onoe's loyal maid, Ohatsu, eavesdrops behind a screen decorated with a full moon above rolling waves. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Kawarazaki Kunitaro, and Kataoka Gado. Nice expressive figures in an attractive interior setting.
