Series; Three Famous Views of Japan

Matsushima in Mutsu Province, 1892 - Terrific view of a group enjoying a boating party to view the striking Matsushima or Pine Islands, considered one of the "Three Famous Views of Japan." A small boy kneels in the front of the boat, wearing sailor suit and using a binocular to view the rocky outcroppings. The women behind him smile and chat, one pointing to the islands as a young girl bites a mochi cake. A tray holds a tiny kettle and small cups. Waves lap against the side of the boat and other sails can be seen as ships maneuver between the many islands. Just the tip of the red setting sun is visible on the horizon beneath a blue sky. A fantastic design, beautifully drawn and detailed. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
