Preparing for Bed, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting the man Hiranoya Kozaburo preparing to retire for the evening. He kneels on a bed holding a white towel over his head, a tobacco set and a pillow on the floor nearby. He wears an informal blue and white cotton robe under an outer kimono bordered with ducks and flowing streams. The courtesan standing at right wears an outer kimono with a similar pattern over a red striped robe, frowning slightly as she looks down at him, her expression slightly haggard. The older woman seems to disapprove of his young visitor, a beauty kneeling beside a brazier at left. At left, Okimi, the flirtatious wife of Kozaburo, tilts her head coyly and smiles as she adjusts a hairpin. From left, the actors are Nakamura Kamenojo, Sawamura Tossho, and Ichimura Kakitsu. Nice interaction between the figures and a handsome interior setting.
