Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Apprentice Courtesan Shiratama and Ushiwaka Denji, 1858

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the apprentice courtesan (shinzo) Shiratama and her lover, Ushiwaka Denji, who are eloping. She looks up at him with a happy grin as she tugs at the collar of her red under robe. Her kimono is patterned with colorful long feathers. Denji looks over his shoulder with an angry frown, staring into space as he clutches a dotted cloth in one hands. Lily pads dot the water behind him, and the city of Edo stretches out along the opposite shore. Nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar. An interesting setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 19 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Light horizontal and vertical lines where backing papers meet. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing, a few creases and spots. Please see photos for details.
