Picture of the Great Horse Races at Ueno Park's Shinobazu Pond, 1885 - Terrific illustration of the Meiji Emperor and Empress attending the races at Union Horse Racing Club's racetrack around Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park. A festive atmosphere prevails with strings of red lanterns hanging from the eaves of the building, and small toys showering down from fireworks exploding in the sky. Boats flying colorful flags enjoy the view from the water. The Imperial box is filled with ladies-in-waiting dressed in fine kimono, and the Emperor wears a black military uniform. A lively scene with great detail and a dramatic panoramic view of the race track. A rarely seen Yoshitoshi subject.
