Courtesan in a Rooster Kimono, 1855

Comments - Lovely portrait of a courtesan strolling through the Yoshiwara at night, smiling as she looks up over her shoulder, her sleeve to her chin. She wears an outer kimono patterned with bamboo beneath a moonlit sky over a gray kimono trimmed with plaid, and a red under robe. Her obi features a striking design of a rooster perched atop a drum overgrown with ivy, a motif symbolizing wise rule. The image comes from the old tale of a drum placed outside the palace gates, for visitors to sound when desiring an audience with the daimyo. During times of wise rule, the drum was never needed, so roosters could rest atop the drum undisturbed and ivy grow over it. A blossoming cherry tree frames the evening sky behind her. A charming design, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collar.
