Taikoki, Act 10, 1890

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from Act 10 of the play "Taikoki," based on a biography of great leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi. At right, Mashiba Hisayoshi (the real-life Toyotomi Hideyoshi) stares ahead with a tight-lipped frown, his elderly mother at his side. In the center, the young samurai Shigejiro stares at him with an angry expression, holding his horned battle helmet aloft. The beauty Hatsukiku kneels at his side, her hand on his wrist as she tries to restrain him. At left, the warrior Takeuchi Mitsuhide emerges from the bushes, lifting his hat above his head, wearing a straw coat over his armor. The wife Misao kneels below. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Nakamura Fukusuke, Nakamura Ganjiro, Ichikawa Shinzo, Ichikawa Sumizo, and Ichikawa Gonjuro I. Nice vibrant color and expressive figures, detailed with embossing on the elderly woman's white hair, burnishing on Hisayoshi's black hat, and accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.
