A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Scene from O megumi niuruo Iwafuji, 1849 - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "O megumi niuruo Iwafuji," in which the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji plots the downfall of Onoe, a junior lady-in-waiting. Iwafuji kneels on a cushion in the center of the room, soberly watching the young woman at left playing with a pet dog. The beauty smiles with pleasure as she reaches out to stroke the pet, which wears a colorful ruffled collar. At right, a samurai dressed in a black hood and robe spies on the pair from behind a shoji screen. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I as the servant Ochiyo, Nakamura Utaemon IV as Iwafuji, and Seki Sanjuro III. Wonderful detail in the interior setting and furnishings, which include a naginata hanging on the back wall a kimono draped over a stand.
