A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

At the Ataka Barrier, Benkei Reads from the Subscription List, circa 1843 - Interesting triptych depicting a legendary episode from the life of the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Disguised as yamabushi (mountain priests), Yoshitsune and his men attempted to slip across the border into Kaga Province to escape the wrath of his brother, Yoritomo. Charged with intercepting them at the Ataka Barrier, the nobleman Togashi became suspicious of the group, so they told him they were collecting funds for temple restoration. Togashi asked Benkei to read a list of the contributors, so thinking quickly, he read a fake subscription list from a scroll. Here, he holds the scroll high above his head as Togashi watches him with an angry frown. Noblemen line the pavilion, glaring sternly at the monks gathered in the cobblestone courtyard. Great expressive faces and wonderful detail in the setting and clothing.
