Mashiba Hisayoshi at Hakone, 1864

Comments - Intriguing image of a large samurai encampment at Hakone enclosed by cloth panels bearing the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan. At lower right, retainers unload sacks of rice onto a mat spread on the ground to feed the troops. Next to them, samurai fill bags with rice from a large shallow tub. At far right, two men lift a bag tied to a pole from a huge kettle cooking over a roaring flame. Piles of brushwood for the fire are stacked nearby. At upper left, a waterfall runs down the side of a mountain, and troops can be seen marching up the hill with their banners above them. At top center, infantrymen charge down the slope into a shower of arrows fired by enemy archers, whose warriors are moving up the mountain to meet the attackers. At right, a castle can be seen on a peninsula. A fascinating subject with wonderful detail.
