Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Sukeroku Yukari no Edo-zakura, 1862

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Sukeroku Yukari no Edo-zakura" featuring from left, Iwai Kumesaburo as the courtesan Miuraya Agamaki, Nakamura Shikan as the white sake seller, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Agemaki's sweetheart, the street knight Sukeroku. The beauty smiles as she watches the sake seller dancing about in the street before a building, using his yoke as a prop. She wears a striking kimono patterned with colorful feathers over red under robes, tied with a black obi featuring oversized peony blossoms. Sukeroku scowls at the vender as he pushes up his kimono sleeve, wearing a burnishing black kimono. Nice expressive figures in an attractively detailed setting.
