Scene from Sandaibanashi kouza no shinsaku, 1863

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Sandaibanashi kouza no shinsaku" of three men deep in conversation. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon as Takemon no Toramatsu, Sawamura Tossho (Sawamura Sojuro) as Kojiro, and Ichikawa Kodanji as Toji. At lower right, Kojiro leans forward with a concerned expression, his hand outstretched in alarm. He stares up at a young commoner, who holds a drawstring money bag in one hand, his other arm folded behind his back. His hair is growing out on top, and the longer hair in back is pulled into a sloppy topknot that has fallen to the side of his head. At upper right, Toji seems quite distressed, his brows furrowed and chin wrinkled. He clutched one sleeve of his checked kimono to his chest while the other tugs on the towel draped over his shoulder. Great large expressive figures, with wonderful interaction between the characters. Soft shading and fine wood grain impression in the night sky. A handsome design from a performance at the Ichimura-za theater.
