Lady Shizuka and the Fox Tadanobu by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lady Shizuka and the Fox Tadanobu

Comments - Handsome image of the young samurai Tadanobu crouching on the steps of a palace before the Lady Shizuka in a scene from the kabuki play "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura." He is actually a magical fox, disguised as Yoshitsune's retainer Tadanobu in order to retrieve the hand drum the beauty is playing. Shizuka looks over her shoulder at him with an alarmed expression, her mouth slightly agape as his fox-like nature comes out. She wears a lovely kimono patterned with blossoms, water, and waves, a cluster of blue flowers adorning her head. Panels lining the back of the room behind her feature clouds drifting across the ocean, with flowering cherry branches framing the scene above. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 187/8"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Two separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical folds at sides. Slight thinning along horizontal centerfolds, repaired with backing. Slight toning, soiling, and rubbing, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
