Series; Mirror of the Ages

Mirror of the Ages - Published in 1897, Chikanobu's beautiful series "Mirror of the Ages" celebrates the beauty and fashions of women of the past. Each print in this delightful series features a single portrait of a young beauty, always carefully and stylishly made up, wearing the traditional contemporary fashion of her time. In the rectangular inset above the figure, Chikanobu has drawn a scene from the same time period suggesting a place where one might see this young beauty. This wonderful series was printed to the highest quality with fine line work and soft shading, and often with additional embellishments, such as delicate embossing or burnishing. A lovely series and collector's favorite.

The Kan'ei Era (1624 - 1644) - Beautiful portrait of a beauty from the Kan'ei Era carrying an offering tray. She looks over her shoulder as if pleasantly surprised, her smiling lips showing fashionably blackened teeth. She has the "moth-wing" eyebrows popular at the time, her shaved natural eyebrows indicated by delicate blue lines. Her outer kimono is patterned with pine sprigs, bamboo shoots, and cherry blossoms in soft colors, the inner white collar embossed with a textured pattern. The design above shows porters shouldering a large black lacquer chest at the head of a daimyo's procession. A lovely design with soft pink shading around the eyes and exquisite fine line work in the hairstyle.
