Hokusai’s Waterfall Prints - Hokusai's waterfall series was a set of eight oban prints published by the same publisher of his "Thirty-six views of Fuji" series, Eijudo. The human figures are always dwarfed by the fantastic scale of the waterfalls. Hokusai expanded on one of his favorite themes with the waterfall series - a contrasting of the mass and majesty of nature with the small, fragile human form. This theme was often a theme for the "Thirty-six views of Fuji" series. However, in the waterfall series, as opposed to the still and immobile Fuji, the waterfalls crash and roar, crawling over rocks and falling through the air, Hokusai perfectly captures the experience of a large waterfall for the viewer. The designs for the waterfall series are, without question, Hokusai masterworks. Reprints of this incredible series are quite rare, so don't miss this opportunity to bid now!
The Waterfall at Yoshino Where Yoshitsune Washed His Horse - Fantastic Hokusai design from his masterwork series "A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls." This impressive scene shows a rushing waterfall flowing over a rugged cliff to a small plateau, where two peasants scrub their horse as it stands in the shallow water. The subject was inspired by a popular story about the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who washed his favorite mount at Yoshino Falls while taking refuge there in the mountains. The white-capped water flows in torrents, zigzagging across the page, sending up a delicate white spray. An incredibly dramatic composition with the water framed by red-brown cliffs and soft shades of foliage. A great image from this terrific series.
Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
