Kabuki Drama with Foxfires, 1885

Comments - Interesting triptych featuring two scenes from a kabuki play. A couple is shown in the center against a deep red background, the nobleman frowning as he looks up at his companion. A dark night scene appears on either side, with a man at left scowling angrily and clenching a blue cloth as he stares over his shoulder at a matron and a young boy at right. She tilts the child's chin up as she looks at him, biting anxiously on a handkerchief. Supernatural foxfires dance in the sky above stacks of grain, with trees and houses in dark silhouette along the horizon. A handsome design with large colorful figures and a dramatic composition.

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/8"
