Spring-colored Garden in Snow, 1879

Comments - Charming depiction of upper-class ladies enjoying refreshments and musical entertainment on a winter's day. At lower left, a beauty plucks a koto, while in the center, another woman plays a flute. At bottom right, a beauty strums a biwa or Japanese lute while her companion at right plays a one-stringed Japanese zither called an ichigenkin. In the center of the floral carpet, a black lacquer stand holds graduated sake cups while other trays hold sweets. At left, sliding glass windows open onto a view of the garden, with plum blossoms framing the pond and birds in flight. An attractive design with wonderful detail and lively color. Includes embossing on the white kimono collar and accents of metallic silver pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.
