Series; Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places

Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places - Handsome design from a series by Kunichika featuring large kabuki portraits paired with small scenes of famous places in Tokyo by Hiroshige III. The portraits are set against a red tie-dyed cloth pattern, providing a bold graphic element. The title cartouche includes a lantern and fringed fireman's standard called a matoi, with the series title referring to fires being so common that they were called "flowers." These lively and interesting scenes are a fun choice for a kabuki enthusiast.

Ichikawa Danjuro as Sekibei, 1875 - Terrific portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as the gatekeeper Sekibei, actually Kuronushi in disguise, from the famous kabuki play "Love at the Snow-covered Barrier Gate." He holds an enormous red lacquer cup of sake in his hand, looking up as he sees the stars reflected on the surface of the drink, taking them for a good omen. He wears a boldly patterned rust colored vest over a green kimono, a rust-colored cloth wrapped about his head. The inset at upper left shows a busy Meiji era stone bridge. A handsome design with vibrant color and fine graphic appeal. Includes burnishing on the black trim on the sleeves.
