Couple beneath a Plum Tree, 1855

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a couple beneath a blossoming plum tree at night. The man rests on one knee, looking down with a sad frown as he holds the end of a white towel over his shoulder. The beauty at right tugs on the other end of the cloth with an alarmed expression, her mouth slightly agape. The pair wears matching gray kimono bordered with blocks of alternating flowers and leaves. A stream winds across the background. Nice expressive figures in an attractive natural setting, with soft bokashi shading in the night sky.
