Scene from Edo-zakura Kiyomizu Seigen, 1858

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Edo-zakura Kiyomizu Seigen." At right, the samurai Torii Shinzaemon extends a sandal on the tip of his sword, waving it accusingly at the beautiful courtesan Miuraya Agemaki. She kneels on the ground, looking up at him with a pleading smile as he glares at her angrily. Her elegant outer robe features a patchwork of patterns, the fabric trailing on the floor around her. Her sweetheart, the street knight Sukeroku, is caught in between the pair, leaning on one knee and holding an umbrella as he frowns at the beauty. Reed blinds hang in the window of the building behind the, which features fine carved details and a blue curtain hanging in the doorway. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Seki Sanjuro III. Nice expressive faces in this handsome design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
