Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Courtesan Agemaki and Kinokuniya Bunzaemon, 1858

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene of the courtesan Agemaki entertaining the rich merchant Kinokuniya Bunzaemon. Impressed with the restrained behavior of Agemaki's sweetheart, the street knight Sukeroku, Bunzaemon decides to buy out Agemaki's contract as a reward for Sukeroku. Here, he looks over his shoulder with a frown, his brows slightly furrowed. He holds a tray with a red lacquer sake cup in one hand and a kettle in the other. Agemaki looks up at him with a delighted smile, holder her sleeve to her chest. Robes are folded atop a chest of drawers behind the pair, while shelves at right holds elegant lacquer boxes above a sliding panel decorated with peonies. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
