Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido - Handsome image from a wonderful early Tokaido Road series designed by Hokusai around 1806. Most images focus on the figure rather than the landscape, showing travelers up close as they journey along the Tokaido or pause for a break along the roadside. Beautifully colored with fine detail, these lively scenes offer an intriguing view of the sights and experiences encountered along this famed route, with clouds drifting across each scene. An attractive early Hokusai design.
