Series; Full-length Mirror of a Hit from the Present-day (Jidai sewa atari sugatami)

Full-length Mirror of a Hit from the Present-day - Handsome kabuki portrait from Toyokuni III's series "Full-length Mirror of a Hit from the Present-day" (Jidai sewa atari sugatami). Each print features an actor in the role of an otokodate or street knight standing in the snow along the water's edge. The figures wear matching violet brick patterned kimono lined with a green and white geometric print over a red under robe, tied with a yellow print obi. Each is armed with a single sword and a shakuhachi flute, which could be used as a weapon if needed. A few boats can be seen on the river with the city stretching out along the opposite bank. A great series with expressive figures in an attractive winter setting, nicely detailed with soft shading in the water and evening sky.
