The Maid Ohatsu, 1857

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." In the drama, the evil lady-in-waiting Iwafuji plots the downfall of her junior, Onoe, by replacing a valuable statue in Onoe's care with a zori sandal. Here, Onoe has sent her loyal maid, Ohatsu, to mail a letter for her. She pauses to lean forward and adjust her obi as she walks along the street, a lantern glowing at left. Two crows fly overhead, a bad omen, and the silhouettes of daimyo's mansions can be seen against the evening sky below. An interesting and atmospheric setting with fine shading in the background.
