Scene from Gosho no Gorozo, 1887 - Handsome kabuki double portrait from the play "Gosho no Gorozo" featuring Nakamura Shikan as the ronin Doemon, drawing his sword with a tight-lipped frown as he glares at the courtesan beside him. She looks up at him with a sweet smile, seemingly unconcerned about his anger. She wear a red outer kimono with a folding fan topped with a peony above a red wig, the traditional costume of a lion dancer, her hair arranged in two loops with many decorative hairpins. A sliding panel behind the couple opens onto a blossoming cherry branch framing the deep blue violet night sky. Nice expressive figures.
