Series; Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1872

Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations - Terrific design from a Tokaido Road series pairing images with verses in calligraphy for the different stations. Different artists contributed designs, including Yoshitora and Kunisada II. The large pictures include landscapes, figures from history and legend, and scenes from kabuki plays and folktales. Several prints feature comic illustrations, including the adventures and mishaps of Kita and Yaji, the bumbling travelers from the popular novel "Shank's Mare." Others include travelers in Western attire or distinctly modern Meiji subjects. These imaginative prints are beautifully detailed with attractive color and fine line work, and offer an interesting Meiji era take on the classic Tokaido subject. A great choice for collectors interested in life along the Tokaido Road.

Kanaya in Omi Province: Tears Falling Like Rain at the Suspension of Ferry Service - Moving scene from a popular kabuki play of a beauty named Asagao (Morning Glory) who has lost her vision through crying for a lost lover. She kneels along the shore of a river, the water swirling past her as she leans on a slender bamboo pole. Her kimono is patterned with delicate scrolls, leave, and red blossoms, tied with a black obi that reverses to a purple tie-dyed design. Above, a kettle serves as a vase for a morning glory blossom, the fan next to it inscribed with a verse. Lovely shading in the water and darkening evening sky. Includes delicate cloth embossing on the fan.
