Comments - Interesting kabuki scene featuring Ichikawa Danjuro as four characters from different dance dramas. At left, after his fiancee commits suicide, the samurai Abe no Yasuna becomes mad with grief. He takes to wearing the beauty's pink short-sleeved kimono, wandering aimlessly about the countryside. At center, a fisherman scratches his head in puzzled manner as a large fish leaps out of the water below, showing its white belly. Next, the Goddess Benten, one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods, looks over her shoulder with a worried frown. She wears a colorful robe and a headdress topped with a miniature torii gate, and holds a biwa or lute. At right, the Heron Maiden wears a pink kimono and robe over her head, an umbrella in hand. An intriguing image, nicely detailed.
